Zhuzhou Data Center Indirect Evaporative Cooling Tower Project

Project Overview

As a pivotal digital infrastructure project in Hunan Province and the Central-South China region, this data center is China Mobile’s largest facility in the Central-South region. It serves as one of China Mobile’s 13 national public cloud nodes, a BSN blockchain public network node under China’s National Information Center, and Hunan’s national internet backbone direct-connect hub, providing robust computing power to drive regional digital economy growth.

 

l Total Land Area: 279 mu (approximately 46 acres; some sources cite 130 mu).

l Infrastructure: 8 data center buildings and auxiliary facilities.

l Total Floor Area: ~160,000 m².

l Total Investment: ~4 billion CNY.

l Function: A comprehensive cloud computing platform integrating IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, and NaaS services.

 


The project designs indirect evaporative cooling water chillers that are green and energy-efficient. In winter, they serve as the direct cooling source for the data center, and in summer, they serve as the cooling source for the water-cooled chillers equipped in the data center. The requirements are as follows:

Summer Rated Operation

Wet-bulb temperature: 28°C

Inlet/outlet water temperature: 38°C/32°C

Condition 2

Winter Rated Operation

Wet-bulb temperature: 16°C

Inlet/outlet water temperature: 23°C/17°C

 

System Configuration

3 sets of Aolan AGS1160-ZLB indirect evaporative chillers, each comprising 12 modules (3 independent systems total).

Summer: High-temperature/humidity conditions – chillers act as cooling towers to supply chilled water (38°C/32°C) for water-cooled chillers.

Transitional Seasons & Winter: Chillers directly provide chilled water (23°C/17°C) to terminal equipment, optimizing energy efficiency.

 


Operation Modes

Summer (Condition 1)

Aolan chillers supply 38°C/32°C chilled water as cooling water for water-cooled chillers.

System Configuration: Indirect evaporative chillers + water-cooled chillers + terminal chilled-water precision air conditioners.

Winter (Condition 2)

Aolan chillers supply 23°C/17°C chilled water as the direct cooling source via plate heat exchangers.

System Configuration: Indirect evaporative chillers + plate heat exchangers + terminal chilled-water precision air conditioners.

Technical Highlights

Energy Efficiency: Utilizes polymer fiber indirect pre-cooling cores to maximize natural cooling, reducing energy consumption by up to 40%.

Project Management: Achieved industry-leading efficiency with a 90-day equipment installation cycle through optimized workflows and precision management.

 


Strategic & Economic Impact

Computing power network layout: As one of the "2+X" core data centers of Hunan Mobile, it, together with Changsha and Xiangtan, forms the largest data center cluster in the province, supporting the "East Computing West Storage" strategy and the "Three Forces" (electricity, computing power, and power) planning of Hunan Province.

Economic benefits: It is expected to attract over a thousand enterprises in the fields of internet, connected vehicles, and big data to settle here, creating a 10-billion-yuan industrial chain and becoming the "new foundation" for the development of digital economy in Hunan Province.
